WSGR Named 2016 Corporate Department of the Year Finalist


Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati was named an overall finalist and winner of the capital markets category in The Recorder’s annual “Corporate Department of the Year” awards. Firm Recognized on The American Lawyer’s 2016 A-List

WSGR was ranked No. 54 in the most recent “A-List” survey, The American Lawyer’s annual ranking aggregated from four ALM surveys conducted throughout the year. Both revenue per lawyer and pro bono rankings are taken from the Am Law 200, while the Diversity Scorecard and the Midlevel Associates Survey provide the diversity and associate satisfaction rankings, respectively. WSGR Achieves Top Rankings for Law Firm Diversity


Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati again earned a top ranking in The American Lawyer’s 2016 Diversity Scorecard, one of the best-known benchmarks measuring law firm diversity. WSGR ranked No. 3 overall, with 26.2 percent minority attorneys and 19.8 percent minority partners. (The American Lawyer, June 2016)

Firm Named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area and San Diego 2016

For the fifth consecutive year, WSGR was named a “Bay Area Top Workplace” by Bay Area News Group based on the results of an independent employee survey. The firm ranked No. 8 and was the only law firm listed in the large business category, which featured companies with 500 or more employees. (Workplace Dynamics, June 2016)

In addition, the firm was named a “Top San Diego Workplace” by The San Diego Union-Tribune. WSGR ranked No. 20 in the top mid-size company category, which featured companies with 100 to 499 employees in the San Diego region. (Workplace Dynamics, November 2016)

WSGR Honored by California Bar Foundation as 2016 Leading Change Diversity Award Winner

WSGR was honored by California Bar Foundation as the law firm recipient of the 2016 Leading Change Diversity Award, which honors leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. WSGR was recognized for its “continued commitment to greater diversity and inclusion, including consistently ranking at the top of The American Lawyer’s list of law firms with the highest number of associates and partners of color.” (September 2016)

WSGR Named a Top-Grossing Law Firm

WSGR moved up to No. 45 from No. 53 in the 2016 Am Law 100. In 2015, the firm posted revenue increases of almost 14 percent—the fourth-highest such gains among the Am Law 100. WSGR was also among just seven firms to increase net income by more than 20 percent, while the firm’s revenue per lawyer passed $1 million for the first time following a 9.3 percent rise from 2014. In addition to the overall ranking, WSGR was ranked No. 34 by revenue per lawyer and No. 23 by profits per partner. (The American Lawyer, April 2016)

The firm also was named to The American Lawyer’s list of the top-grossing law firms in the world. According to the publication’s Global Legal 100, revenue was up 4.3 percent and profits per equity partner were up 5.4 percent among global firms. WSGR Ranked No. 55 in 2016 NLJ 500

WSGR ranked No. 55 in the latest NLJ 500 survey, The National Law Journal’s annual ranking of U.S. law firms by number of attorneys. The survey showed that U.S. attorney headcount in 2015 dipped slightly, from 147,500 in 2014 to about 146,600 lawyers. In addition, the firm was ranked No. 77 in the NLJ Women in Law Scorecard. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati was ranked No. 46 on Law360’s 2016 list of the 400 largest firms in the U.S. as measured by domestic attorney headcount. (Law360, March 2016)

In The American Lawyer’s list of U.S. metropolitan cities that have the largest counts of big-firm lawyers, WSGR ranked No. 11 in the publication’s roundup of the largest law firm offices in the San Francisco market, with a total of 84 attorneys. (The American Lawyer, August 2016)

WSGR Recognized Among Largest Law Firms in California

WSGR was No. 3 in The Recorder’s ranking of the firms with the most lawyers in California, with 462 attorneys. The firm was also noted in the accompanying article for increasing its firmwide headcount by 4 percent from 2014 to 2015. (The Recorder, July 2016)

Firm Named to Vault’s Top 100 Law Firms for 2017 List

WSGR was ranked No. 47 in Vault’s annual Law 100 rankings for 2017. The rankings were based on scores from more than 18,000 law firm associates surveyed in early 2016 who were asked to rate law firms on a scale of one to ten based on prestige. (Vault, June 2016)

WSGR Recommended by Corporate Counsel, According to BTI Consulting Group

For the fourth consecutive year, the firm was honored by BTI Consulting Group as one of the top law firms recommended by corporate counsel. According to BTI president Michael Rynowecer, the top factor that drives a client to recommend a law firm to a peer is client service. (BTI Consulting Group. June 2016)

WSGR Honored with 2015 “Green Business Leader” Award from City of Palo Alto

In April 2016, WSGR was honored by Palo Alto Mayor Pat Burt with a “Green Business Leader” award in recognition of the firm’s commitment to improving building energy efficiency. It was the fourth time WSGR has been honored with the Green Business award, which recognizes companies in Palo Alto with buildings that received Energy Star certification in the previous year.

In January 2016, WSGR announced the opening of a Boston office to better serve the growing life sciences community, as well as the expanding technology, energy, and other growth companies in the market.

Firm Launches CFIUS Resource Center

Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati recently announced the launch of the WSGR CFIUS Resource Center. Prepared by members of the firm's national security practice, the new site provides timely information on the latest developments in the ever-changing regulatory landscape surrounding the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), including CFIUS background information, useful links, news and updates on the latest CFIUS regulations and legislation, and thoughtful insight and analysis on important CFIUS topics.

WSGR Publishes Summer 2016 and Winter 2017 Editions of The Life Sciences Report


In June, the firm published the Summer 2016 edition of The Life Sciences Report. This issue included feature articles on the future of innovation in medtech, the growth of the consumer digital health sector, and how to stay out of trouble when making promotional claims for dietary supplements. The report also included data on life sciences venture financing transactions handled for our clients in 2015, as well as information on life sciences transactions and events.

In addition, the Winter 2017 edition of The Life Sciences Report included feature articles on new opportunities in consumer digital health, non-dilutive funding sources for medical device and biotechnology companies, utility models and design patents, and FDA expedited review programs. This report also included data on life sciences venture financing transactions handled for our clients in the second half of 2015 and the first half of 2016, as well as information on the firm’s recent life sciences transactions and upcoming events.

Firm Publishes Four Editions of The PTAB Review


In April, WSGR published the inaugural issue of The PTAB Review, a newsletter prepared by attorneys in the firm’s post-grant practice. The publication—which is published on a periodic basis as important issues arise—closely follows recent developments in Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) litigation. It aims to provide timely information on key developments in Patent Office litigation, concise summaries of significant rulings and guidelines, and details on relevant patent dispute trends. Subsequent issues explored various topics, including trends in post-grant review proceedings, details on recent decisions from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and problems associated with evolving theories of unpatentability during a PTAB proceeding.

WSGR Publishes 2016 Diversity Newsletter


In July, the firm published the 2016 edition of the Diversity Newsletter, which featured a profile of partner Jamillia Ferris and a Q&A with the firm’s five newly elected minority partners. The newsletter also included articles on WSGR’s commitment to diversity, diversity-focused achievements, pro bono work on behalf of various diversity-focused nonprofits, and the 2015 WSGR Foundation Diversity Scholar.

Pro Bono And Community Services

In 2016:

  • The firm provided approximately 40,000 hours of pro bono legal work.
  • The WSGR Foundation contributed more than $1,092,000 to nearly 75 law-related organizations and more than 140 community organizations.
  • Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati attorneys and staff participated in nearly 90 community activities. Organizations with which they volunteered provided support for human services, hunger relief, health, youth and education, animals, the environment, and home and community-facility renovation.

WSGR Receives Animal Legal Defense Fund’s 2016 Pro Bono Achievement Award

After successfully settling a lawsuit against Mendocino County that compelled the county’s compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), WSGR filed a second lawsuit against Monterey County under CEQA. For their efforts, they were awarded—for the second year in a row—the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s (ALDF’s) 2016 Advancement of Animal Law Pro Bono Achievement Award, which recognizes the team’s and the firm’s dedication, expertise, and commitment of pro bono hours in helping ALDF achieve its mission to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The WSGR pro bono team was honored at the ALDF’s 2016 Animal Law Conference held in New York in October 2016
